Hi there, I’m Ciaran Owens. I’m a friendly, cynical, slightly unhinged, yet charming (apparently) northerner living in the North East of England. This is my blog where I share musings of things I’ve seen in the press, technology I’m working on, various car projects, and other artefacts that are too big for Twitter.
Hobbies
- I’m a bit of a musician, having historically played piano and drums, but have kept more current with guitar which I’ve played for 18 years.
- Classic car restoration and tuning usually finds ways of making me spend money.
- Love travelling, especially road trips with friends in fun and silly cars.
- While I’m not particularly athletic, I enjoy walking, running and cycling.
Silly Facts
- I absolutely love TVRs. There’ll never be a moment where there isn’t one in my garage if I can help it.
- A few years ago I spent a good deal of time working in Brooklyn/NYC, and it has ruined my perception of good pizza. I’m still getting over how much smaller a pint is over there.
- I like beer but beer doesn’t really like me, so I use that as an excuse to drink lots of gin and tonic instead.
- As a ‘northerner’, curry runs in my blood.
- Vegetarian, have been since birth.
- Despite the numerous times I’ve tried moving away from the North East, I seem to gravitate back towards it.
- I’m a massive music nerd and have a silly wide taste. You might catch me listening to jazz one moment and then industrial rock the next.
Work
Currently I work for Nexor Ltd, based in Nottingham, as a cybersecurity consultant, doing a fair whack of consulting for defence.
Previously I have spent a great deal of my career as a cloud architect, software architect, DevOpsy stuff, network consulting, etc. You can find the gory history on LinkedIn. I’ve had the opportunity to work on some bizarre projects with firms like Ciena, the NHS, Verizon, Lumen, and many others.
My education is from Newcastle University, where I received a BSc with honours in Computer Science.
